Volunteer Services at Unity Hospital

Four Unity volunteers, three women, one man, stand in a group.

Unity's volunteers donated nearly 43,000 hours of service in 2008

Since the beginning of Unity Hospital, volunteers coming from all walks of life have been united by their commitment to giving back to their community. Today, Unity’s volunteers provide support to more than 20 different areas around the hospital.

These positions provide opportunities in varying levels of patient contact and physical activity. Volunteering is an excellent chance to gain experience, discover new talents, abilities and make lasting friendships.

Volunteering options

Unity Hospital has two categories of volunteers. VolunTeens are young men and women ages 15 to 18 years old. Unity Adult Volunteers are men and women 18 years of age and older. It is the diversity of our volunteers that makes our program so special.

Unity Hospital Auxiliary History

The thriving Auxiliary Program at Unity Hospital continues a proud legacy of volunteer service that predates the opening of the hospital itself. The original Auxiliary consisted of more than 150 active volunteers in preparation of the May 1966 opening of the hospital. Today, our Auxiliary includes more than 350 active volunteers in providing exceptional service to our hospital, its patients, their families and our community.

Organized as a service auxiliary, the Unity Hospital Auxiliary members generously give back to the hospital and the community each year through funds raised by the hospital gift shop other fundraising activities. In 2007, the Auxiliary donated over $89,000 in grants for equipment and supplies utilized throughout the hospital. In addition, the Auxiliary donated over $17,000 in scholarship programs at both Unity Hospital and Anoka Ramsey Community College.

All active adult volunteers are invited to join the Unity Hospital Auxiliary. Auxiliary members will receive recognition for volunteer hours, a bi-monthly newsletter, invitation to appreciation events and annual education day training.

How often can I volunteer?

Volunteers are asked to commit to one 4-hour shift every two weeks. We will work with you on an individual basis to find a time that not only meets the needs of the hospital but also is convenient for you. Shift hours are usually:

  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

How do I begin volunteering at Unity?

Attending a volunteer orientation session is the first step in the process. Prospective volunteers must attend one of the monthly orientation sessions which are 2 1/2 hours long. At the orientation, we will:

  • provide written materials for future reference
  • discuss what volunteers do at Unity
  • cover basic policies for volunteering
  • provide health care information and forms
  • offer you an opportunity to ask questions
