Diabetes Care/Education

New Ulm Medical Center Diabetes Care program strives to provide patients with the knowledge and tools to become engaged and active in their diabetes management. It’s designed to help patients manage diabetes every step of the way.

Our classes are taught by registered nurses and/or dietitians who are certified in diabetes education.

The costs of the classes are often covered by insurance plans.

One-on-one session

When a patient is diagnosed with diabetes, he or she should schedule a one-on-one session with a diabetes educator. This program is accredited by the American Diabetes Association. This program takes place at the New Ulm Medical Center.

Diabetes Basics Series

This series covers everything you need to know about living with diabetes and keeping it under control. The following topics are covered in four sessions, which last approximately 2-3 hours:

Meeting times

First Monday of the month starting at 6 p.m.

First Tuesday of the month starting at 8:30 a.m.

Because ongoing education is so important for managing diabetes, the cost of this class if often covered by health plans. Please check with your health plan to be sure.

Insulin pump training

If you choose to use an insulin pump to manage your diabetes, our one-on-one training will help you thoroughly understand the pump and optimize its use.

Annual Diabetes Update

The American Diabetes Association recommends you see a diabetes educator once a year to review and update your self-management plan. Ongoing education is very important since new information and new tools for managing diabetes are constantly being developed.

Patients with diabetes are encouraged to attend the Annual Diabetes Update class (prerequisite is Diabetes Basic Series).
