Abbott Northwestern Hospital achieves Magnet Recognition Program® status
MINNEAPOLIS 02/18/2009--The American Nurses Credentialing Center has awarded Magnet Recognition Program®status to Abbott Northwestern Hospital, making it one of only 316 hospitals nationwide — less than five percent of all U.S. hospitals — that have been designated MagnetTM facilities. The award is the highest level of recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and is valid for four years.
"This is a tremendous honor for our nurses," said Terry Graner, vice president of Patient Care Services for Abbott Northwestern. "Every day, they work diligently to provide the highest level of care possible for our patients and continuously find ways to advance nursing practice. At Abbott Northwestern, we have known for a long time that our nurses are exceptional. This award elevates that understanding to a national level."
The Magnet Recognition Program, established by the ANCC, recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. According to the ANCC, Magnet hospitals consistently deliver better patient outcomes than non-Magnet hospitals, including more time nurses spend at the patient’s bedside, shorter lengths of patient stay, lower patient mortality rates, higher patient satisfaction rates, and higher nurse retention, recruitment, and job satisfaction rates.
During the rigorous review process required to achieve Magnet status, a hospital must demonstrate, in writing and in person, that it is committed to sustaining nursing excellence, improving professional practice and transforming the culture of a work environment. In August 2008, Abbott Northwestern submitted a 2,000-plus-page document and the review process concluded with a five day site visit in December. During the site visit, a team of appraisers from the ANCC observed nursing practice in action, making certain that day-to-day performance measured up to the standards set by the ANCC.
"Abbott Northwestern's success and reputation for exceptional patient care is based largely on the excellence of our nurses," said Jeff Peterson, president of Abbott Northwestern. "They are an essential part of our care team and are most deserving of this recognition. Magnet designation is outside verification of all the reasons we are so proud of our Nursing Department."
Abbott Northwestern Hospital is part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, a not-for-profit health care system of hospitals, clinics and other patient care services that provides exceptional care to communities throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin and employs more than 22,000 people.
