Vascular surgery

Vascular surgeons diagnose and treat problems with blood vessels, veins and arteries. (They do not treat problems with the brain or the heart.)

These surgeons can:

• open blocked arteries to prevent stroke and treat carotid artery disease (This may include angioplasty and stents).
• repair veins to improve blood circulation and treat peripheral artery disease (PAD)
• treat aneurysms.

They also treat vascular disease with medicine, therapies and/or lifestyle changes.
