Grilled barbequed beef and bean burgers

This healthful addition to your outdoor grilling menu includes two good sources of protein.

Ingredients

1/2 pound extra-lean ground beef
1 can (15 to 16 ounces) great northern beans, drained, rinsed
1/4 cup fine crushed saltine crackers (about 7 squares)
2  tablespoons BBQ sauce
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 egg
5 whole-grain hamburger buns, split
5 teaspoons BBQ sauce

Directions

  1. Heat gas or charcoal grill.
  2. In large bowl, mix beef, beans, cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce, pepper and egg.
  3. Shape into 5 patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Brush grill with vegetable oil.
  5. Place patties on grill.
  6. Cover. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes.
  7. Turn. Cook covered for 5 to 6 minutes longer or until meat thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  8. Put patties between buns and top with 1 teaspoon BBQ sauce.

For broiler: Place patties on broiler pan. Broil with tops 4 to 5 inches from heat using previous times as a guide. Turn once and spread with BBQ sauce after turning.
